Back Stiffness

Why do I have Back stiffness?

Back stiffness can originate from the joints, bones or soft tissues in and around the spine.

What causes Back stiffness?

Back stiffness can be caused by mechanical joint issues, muscle spasm, arthritis, poor posture or injuries in the back.

How is Back stiffness evaluated?

A history, assessment and physical examination will help to try to establish the cause/s of your back stiffness. Imaging like x-rays may be required to see if there are any causes e.g. arthritis or congenital anomalies. Any imaging is to help get a better picture of the joints, bones or soft tissue.

What is the treatment for Back stiffness?

Treatment really depends on the cause. If the stiffness is from your joint or muscles you may wish to consult a chiropractor, osteopath or acupuncturist. Treatment may include joint manipulation and manual movement, muscles may be worked on and exercises may be prescribed. If stiffness is persistent, recurrent, accompanied with pain or accompanied with any other serious signs or symptoms, apart from seeking treatment above, you may wish to consult your local GP who may provide further assessment, give advice or recommend a specialists opinion.
